The human being became a dashboard, constantly monitored for efficiency and growth potential. Inner states were quietly ignored unless they interfered with output; even then, the response was not to alter the environment but to patch the worker just enough for them to return to the line.

In this environment, the act of working no longer nourished identity. It consumed it. People learned to introduce themselves by their function inside an extraction engine rather than by the gifts they carried. The question “What do you do?” was no longer an invitation to speak about contribution, but a request to show which slot in the hierarchy you occupy.

Debts, social pressure, status symbols, and curated ambitions all form a net around the worker, ensuring that leaving the engine feels reckless, even when staying inside it is slowly killing them.

Once the human drive to build is captured, it can be pointed at whatever serves the machine. People will pour their creativity into products they don’t believe in, spend their prime years climbing ladders that lead nowhere they truly want to go, and sacrifice their health, relationships, and inner life to protect positions that could be erased by a single restructuring email. The system does not need to chain them to the floor; it only needs to bind their sense of worth to their role.
The Outcome
The world is now full of people who wake up already exhausted by a day that hasn’t happened yet. Their calendars are full, their inboxes overflowing, their minds occupied from dawn until sleep, yet they struggle to answer a simple question: why am I doing any of this. The sense of being drained without being moved, of being active without feeling alive, becomes the background hum of their existence.

Burnout is treated as an individual malfunction rather than a structural design. People blame their coping skills, their mindset, their personal habits, while the environment that overclocks them is left unexamined.
